4 Easter Weekend Activities you can do with your Kids at Home

DAY 1: Good Friday

DECORATE YOUR OWN EGGS

Decorating eggs is a super fun activity for the kids and you will most likely have all the ingredients at your fingertips. They get a kick out of seeing their creations come to life, but also learn the effects of dyeing and how the dyeing process works.

Simply boil fresh eggs so they are nice and hard. (Note: You can blow out the eggs to leave only the shell if you want to keep them for a long time, but the boiling method is much easier and the eggs will certainly last through Easter). Set them aside to cool and then get your kids to draw on them with crayon to make a pattern or face. Place the eggs in coloured dye and see the transformation. Let them dry and you have your own Easter egg display that won’t send the kids around the bend.

DAY 2: Easter Saturday

MAKE AN EASTER EGG BASKET

You can’t collect eggs without a basket to put them in and it is surprisingly easy to make one! All you need is:

A piece of decorative cardboard (6 inch squared should be enough, but any size along as it is square will work – the bigger the better!). You could also use felt if you’re feeling really creative!

Scissors

Tape or glue to hold your basket together.

1. Draw 4 lines on your card evenly spread out like you are playing a game of naughts and crosses. For example to horizontal lines at 2 inches apart and 2 vertical lines the same.
2. Cut the 2 vertical lines from the edge of the paper up toward the horizontal lines, stopping when you reach the line. This will create flaps with a square base for the base of the basket.
3. Fold the 2 sides up to meet each other and form a square basket shape. Tape or glue to flaps on the inside of the basket.
4. Cut a handle from another piece of card about the same length as the original card. Stick the handle to the basket using tape or glue.
5. Decorate your basket if you feel the need to and you’re done!

DAY 3: Easter Sunday

MAKE YOUR OWN EASTER SOCK BUNNY

If you’re house is anything like mine, there is a collection of odd socks hanging around somewhere having a good old party in my absence. It is honestly one of the biggest mysteries in life as to where those socks actually go. Anyway, this is a good way to use a couple of those odd socks. All you will need is:

A sock – Dad’s socks usually work best as they are a little bigger.

Scissors

Rice, cotton filling or cotton wool for the filling

2 rubber bands

White felt for the tummy and teeth

Pink button for the nose

2 googly eyes. (You can use white felt for the eyes and use a black texta to mark the pupils)

Glue

What to do:

1. Fill the sock half way with your filling of choice. We use rice as it is easy to pour. Leave enough excess at the top for the ears.
2. Tie the sock off with a rubber band so the rice stays put and then place another rubber band a little way down to form a separate head and body.
3. Cut the felt into an oval and place on the bunny’s body to make a white tummy. Glue it in place.
4. Cut out a “v” to make teeth and glue them with the two points facing downwards to the rabbits face to make the mouth.
5. Glue the pink button just above the teeth for the rabbits nose.
6. Glue to eyes into place to complete the face.
7. Cut the top of the sock that is loose into two down the middle to form 2 ears. Cut around them to shape as desired.
8. Finally, place a little cotton wool ball onto the back of the rabbits body to make a little fluffy tail. Bingo bango, you have your very own Easter Bunny!

DAY 4: Easter Monday

MAKE A COLLAGE PICTURE WITH FOIL

The one thing with Easter Eggs is the bits of foil that come along with them. You end up finding foil wrappers around for weeks after Easter has been and gone. Encourage the kids to keep their foil wrappers in a safe place and reuse them in an art piece. Simply glue the wrappers onto a piece of card and let your kids imagination run wild with pictures and colourful patterns. Save the environment and your sanity!
